Show Davis ties for State 4A I rack Title - tr ! r.rrri - - - i -Si-" J, l. - J" -J r i i By TOM HARALDSEN PROVO-Davis High captured its second straight boys 4-A state track and field title Saturday afternoon after-noon at Brigham Young University, earning a tie with East when the Leopards botched the meet's final event, the 1 600 meter relay. Entering that final race, which the Leopards figured to either win or place second in, all East had to do was finish in the points to win the title. But on the second leg of the race, the Leopard runner dropped the baton, and East could not recover in time to score. So John Flint and his crew from Davis earned a portion of the state title they won last year. In a sport where "the breaks' ' certainly play a factor in determining who wins or loses, the Darts finally got one. It was a close competition as expected, ex-pected, with Davis and East both finishing with 50 points, Timpview third at 47 and Viewmont fourth at 44. In the 4A girls' competition, Davis was tied for fifth with Roy at 32 points, while Viewmont finished tied for 20th with four. Meanwhile, Bountiful finished a strong fourth in 3A boys' team competition with 49 points, behind state champ Box Elder, second-place second-place Dixie and third-place Ogden. Woods Cross finished 18th with six points. In 3A girls' Woods Cross was 12th with 17 points and Bountiful Boun-tiful 17th with four. There were several surprises in the meet involving local teams. In boys' competition, Brighton's 1600 meter relay team edged Viewmont for the title, 3:21.96 to 3:22.46. The Vikes were expected to battle East 10); and Viewmont's medley relay team (second) and 1600 relay team (second), along with Davis 1600 relay team (third). In 3A boys, Bountiful got strong performances from Brandon Stock (second, 100 meters, 11.38, sixth, 200 meters, 22.68);, Jeremy Reynolds (fifth, 100 meters, 11:43, first in 200 meters, 21.94); Philip Tate (state champ in 300 hurdles, 39.88); Brandon Wilding (second, 1600 meters, 4:21.90), and the medley relay team, which won the state title in a time of 3:35.10. Woods Cross got all six of its points on Friday, when Kitt Rawl-ings Rawl-ings took third place in the long jump. Among the ladies, Sheri Arsenault of Davis took home third place in the 400 meters (59.13), and Dayna Smith pulled a mild upset when she won the state 800 meters in a time of 2: 17.46, besting heralded herald-ed runners Lynnette Peterson of Bingham and Amy Allen of Moun-x Moun-x tain View. Davis also placed second h in the 1600 relay and fourth in the oa medley relay. Viewmont received its four points when Kim Blackham placed 3 fourth in the javelin on Friday. Woods Cross' girls team was : particularly impressive. Dawn Britton was fifth in the javelin (99-5), Brooks Percifield was second se-cond in the shot put (36-4) and fifth in discus, and Alayna Mair was sixth in the long jump. In addition, the Wildcat's medley relay team of Britton, Mair, Michelle Devey and : Maureen Newland just missed a , medal, finishing seventh. Boun-tifuTs Boun-tifuTs Cody Poole earned her team's points with a fourth-place finish in the high jump on Friday. Ballards' winning leap cleared 6'9". for that title, both teams dominating champions in Steve Ballard in the the event all year.
