Show Search and Rescue bids for control of rifle ranae By SCOTT SUMMERILL FARMINGTON The Davis County Commission was scheduled to hear proposals today from two organizations wanting to contract with the county to manage and " maintain the Davis County Rifle Range in Fruit Heights. ;, v The contract for running the v range has been held by the Wasatch t V , , .II Shooters Association since its inception in-ception some 10 years ago, and the Davis County Sheriffs Department reports there have been many complaints com-plaints about the management and poor upkeep recently. The contract expires June 1, and the Davis County Search and Rescue Res-cue (S&R) organization has submitted sub-mitted a bid to take over the de teriorating facility with hopes of revitalizing and improving it. Some of the improvements planned by the S&R team include running power lines to the range, installing concrete pads for shooters and improving drainage on the property, according to Davis County Coun-ty Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy K. D. Simpson. Simpson said his department has received complaints from residents that the facility is rundown and range managers are often rude and uncooperative with users of the facility who are not members of the shooters association. In addition, the range is used by police officers, and there has been a lot of problems getting time for officers to train. The S&R has a larger operating base and can afford to make much needed improvements on the facility, facili-ty, according to Simpson. The S&R also wants to get nearby residents involved in management of the range, clean up the grounds and make sure there are trained range masters on duty at all times to ensure en-sure safety and help residents with any problems they may have while on the range. "The shooters association doesn't have anyone who is trained in weapons and safety like the Search Sear-ch and Rescue people have," Simpson Simp-son said. "The search and rescue's cost will probably be cheaper too. The hearing for the proposals was scheduled to take place after press time. Also, though repeated attempts have been made, Wasatch Shooters Association officials have been unavailable for comment. |
