Show We need environmentalists Dear Editor Regarding the May 13 article, "Who needs environmentalists?" by R. English, the answer is, "We all do." Surely English doesn't think our political leaders are really working to save our planet or anything on it What does he think Earth Day is all about? Hasn't he heard about acid rain, killer pesticides, water, air and ground pollution, the thinning ozone layer, killing of the rain forests and the elimination of plant and animal species, one after the other? The Wildlife Resources and stockmen have brought about overpopulation over-population of deer and elk. Of course, they have all but eliminated the cougar, bobcat, lynx, wolf, bear, etc. to do it. If Wildlife Resources cared about animals, they would protect them all. Their real concern is selling licenses and permits to kill them. Deer will starve in the winter, with or without hunting. Hunters don't kill the old and sick, only the young and healthy. That is why the deer gene pool is producing smaller and more fragile deer all the time. Eighty-five percent of us don't hunt, but we have nothing to say about these wild creatures. Meanwhile, Mean-while, 15 percent, the stockmen and Wildlife Resources keep blowing them away. The good changes in our world have been brought about by the environmentalists en-vironmentalists and protectionists. We should all get involved to save our world. This can't be done by valuing only money and killing everything from clean air, water, to all living things, including ourselves. Educate yourself, Mr. English, and you'll take a very different stand. Leigh Engelbrecht Bountiful |
