The day was originally set aside to honor the war dead, and over the years evolved into a day when all those who had gone before could be honored and remembered. We asked our readers to respond to the question "Do you think Memorial Day is being observed ob-served as it was originally intended?" intend-ed?" According to John VanWeezup, it is not "Most people use it as a family outing and they go quickly to the cemetery to get it over and done with. I don't think people should go around with a long, sad face all day, but we some forget to go to the cemeteries to remember the deceased. They are part of our heritage. We should be thankful for what they gave us in our lives." Danny Stott said they use the day to go as a family to the graves of their deceased relatives. I don't know them but my mom and dad did, and my grandpa always tells us stories about them. ' "I think people are observing it," said Maxine Ahleen. "I know our family is. We travel in a caravan to every grave site, and then we usually have a picnic." Kelly Olsen said he feels most 1 people are looking at it as a holiday, i "The majority of us look forward to it as a three-day weekend. This year i have to work," he said. "I really don't think they do look at it as they used to," said Henny Smith. People use to visit and decorate dec-orate the graves, but now that every mall is open it's different I don't think most people know what it is about. "This is just like a lot of our holidays. It has lost its true meaning. mean-ing. It's just a day to play," said Rebecca Duncan. "I don't think it's a holiday that is used to remember or commemorate out dead. ' ' |
