" By SCOTT SUMMERILL The Davis County Commission entered an official statement into the minutes of the May 21 meeting which stated the courthouse parking lot would not be able to facilitate any overflow parking from the pro-: pro-: posed Farmington Runaway House during working hours. The statement came after the commission heard arguments from ' Gary Mears, a Farmington resident representing a community group opposing the use of the Rock Hotel as a runaway youth home, that there is not adequate parking at the proposed pro-posed site, and the overflow would ' create a burden on the courthouse and library parking lots. Commissioner William Lawrence agreed the parking lots arc already overcrowded, but he opposed giving any kind of official statement that could be used as leverage by the group. "We haven't even been ap- preached with anything on this," he i said. "I fear that a statement like i that would be viewed as a projected , stand by the commission on the '; house. I would not feel comfortable r i giving you that kind of leverage to use in a public meeting. ' Though Mears approached the ; commission with concerns of park- ': ing, his presentation painted a l different picture of why he opposed ; the runaway house. "Our kids walk by that place going go-ing to and from school every day," he said. ' All the drug problems mat . would go on there, and other problems prob-lems would spill out into the street. We're not opposed to the idea, we just don 't like their choice of locations." loca-tions." Mears added that state officials were opposed to the house too. But when questioned by the commission, commis-sion, he was unable to say who in the state was opposed. "I didn't talk to them," he said. "I'm just relaying second-hand information. in-formation. ' Mears also claimed the same state officials don t believe the group trying to develop the home is qualified to manage the facility. "The state doesn't feel this group is capable of handling this," Mears told the board.
