Show On the West Side j A sketch of the development of the residence districts of Salt Lake City would be incomplete without a reference refer-ence to what has been dono on the west side of the city, as well as along the eastern benches. The growth here has not been so prominent and iii many respects docs not contain the possibilities that exist on the other side of the city. There has been, nevertheless, never-theless, nnd within a comparatively short time, a development along the grouud lying to the. west of the business busi-ness district which is significant, in view of I he expansion of the business district southward! It has been pointed out that, just as the retail business section of Salt Lake City will be locnted along Main street and extend in both directions cast aDd west, so tho great commercial industries, indus-tries, the manufacturing interests, will make their home on tho west side, where the railroad tracks are, and , where trackage and other facilities for business aro present or casil' obtainable. obtain-able. Attention is called, also, to the fact that in nny city whero great enterprises enter-prises are carried on there must be provided a' locality whore the men to operate those industries may live, quietly, in - good surroundings, and within fairly easy access of their work. . Such a locality is provided in Salt Lako by the ever increasing west side district. Not there are not now many pretty little farms there, or that the neat orchards and garden patches aro lacking. As a matter of fact, these aro some of the attractive features fea-tures of the country to the west of the business section at the present time. Tho section reaches from the tracks of the Oregon Short Line railway west to the Jordan river, aud even beyond. aro indications that the Iocalit3' will ultimately be utilized for residence purposes. pur-poses. Nearer at hand, however, the additions of Oakley, Onkdalc, aud the vicinity aro being filled with attractive attract-ive homes. Farther south, tho little suburb of Poplar Grove has begun to be prominent in tho population of the city. Jn these districts, it is not. unusual to see whole blocks which havo boen converted into home sites and new residences resi-dences built, lieports of builders indicate in-dicate an astonishing activitj' there, and houses spring up as if b3' magic in a night. The district of Oakley includes in-cludes the country between Fifth or Sixth North and South Temple and extends from Seventh or Eighth West to tho Jordan river. Poplar Grove is farther south, opposite Ninth South, and lj'ing ou tho west side of the Jordan. The intervening country- is also bqing slowly built up and it is expected that onl- a few 3-ears will produce a complete residence section along both sides of tho river comparable compara-ble in size to the development along the benches on the east side. Eeal estate dealers talk glibb' of the completion of the electric road to Garfield, Gar-field, which will feed tho lower west side aud 'bring all of the territorj' there within easj' reach of tho city. Tho city limits are nearh- three miles awa3 from tho postoffice at this point, and it is said that rapid transit is tho onl3' thing now required to make tho place one of tho most attractive sections sec-tions in the city. |
