One of tho smoothest swindles thnt has been worked in the far west is boing perpetrated perpe-trated on merchants of tho Pacific coast b3 an unknown man, who is floating checks ostensibly given by W. A. Cowdcn, former clork of tho supremo court of the stato of Tennessee. The lattor, according to advices from Nash-villo. Nash-villo. has been deal soveral yoars. When a check was rotumod from Nashville with tho statement "no funds," an investigation revealed the fact that tho man had loft tho city soon aftor passing tho check. Further communication with a Nashville bank brought out the statement that Mr. Cowdon had been dead for several years. Tho swindler had evidently in some manner obtained possession of tho official offi-cial slationo-, blank checks and seal of Mr. Cowdon, and was filling them out and cashing thorn. It was apparent that ho had a confederate; in Nashvillo who was supplying him with tho necessary neces-sary "Cowdon" correspondence, bearing bear-ing tho proper postmarks. |
