On Saturday last tho projectors mado a test run of tho Karns tuneling ma-chino ma-chino at Boulder. Thoso present at the run wero: H. A. Sunincr and Tv w. Weston, chief engineer and geological expert of the Moffat road; Thomas Fielding of the firm of Hampson & Fielding; TV. A. Townsend, representing represent-ing Steams & Rogers; J. C. Kauffman, of tho Central Colorado Power company, formerly tunnel tun-nel inspector during the building period of tho Moffat road. On account of the bad condition of the roads, thoir time at the inino was very limited, allowing after thorough inspection of the machine ma-chine and its equipment, only an hour and a half for actual running. In this time thero were two runs of approximately approxi-mately thirty-Lwo inches each, with the moving up and resetting between these runs, an operation consuming approximately approxi-mately seven or eight minutes. Tho nctual running lime, watches being held by Mr. Sumner and Wr. Weston, as eightj'-nine minutes, in which time the machine accomplished sixty-four and one-quarter inches of six-foot tunnel, in rock which would bo considered harder than tho average. All present at tho trial above mentioned men-tioned were impressed with the perfection perfec-tion of the machine and its rapid work. Tho boring of sixty-four and one-quarter inches, or five aud one-quarter feel, in a littlo less thau au hour and a half is considered an excellent record for a new invention of this character. This signifies that by continuous running for leu hours the maehiue ought lo make over fifty feet a du3 Tho Utah-Karns Tunneling Machine company has tho sole rights for this machine in Utah. President Belcher is now making arrangements to take a party of local newspaper and mining men to Boulder to witness a demonstration, demonstra-tion, the results of which will be awaited await-ed with interest. |
