The balance of Southern Colorado and the power of Western New Mexico in the sprints will pfobably make those two slight favorites in the 1979 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference track championships. Southern Utah State College will host the meet, but it will be held on the Dixie College field in St. George Saturday beginning at 10:15 a.m. with field events. "We are being forced to move the meet to St. George because our newly remodeled track will not be finished in time," Steve Lunt, SUSC track coach said. Adams State, the probable conference favorite under normal conditions, is sending sen-ding only a token squad to the meet because of financial reasons. Many members of the Adams State squad who have (nullified for national competition will not compete in the conference showdown. That opens up the chase for the title to the other schools. Host SUSC probably has its best chance to pick up conference championships in the javelin, the shot put, and the long jump. Robert Shirts has the best mark in the conference this year in the javelin with a toss of 211-9. 211-9. He is also among the top long jumpers in the league. Both Joe Wells and Don Smith have good enough marks in th shot put to rank them among the contenders for a conference championship cham-pionship in that event. Last week at the Utah State University Invitational, Wells had a toss 51 -fi to establish a new SUSC school record; that placed him third. Smith finished sixth at 48-9. Shirts placed in the javelin (third) with a throw of 204-6 and the long jump (sixth) w ith a jump of 21-11. Probable favorites by event in Saturday's RMAC meet : 100-Chano Talavera (9.8).
