Show Youth join AAU Swim Team : Thirty young people between the ages of 7 and 16 make up the local AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Swimming Team coached by Dick Coston. Coston indicates that by belonging to this Union records are kept on every member throughout the United States and if a person in Cedar should break an already established record, it would be recorded and that young person would be given credit for it. Young people 5 to 18 are eligible for the team and there is also a Senior Division for those over 18 who might be interested. The 18 girls and 12 boys who make up the team have been practicing and working since last October. At this .point in time they have just been involved in Inter-squad meets which have been open to the public. However, Coston indicatesthat as soon as some other towns in the Southern Utah area get programs organized there will be some competition set up :' with those teams. Right now they are working toward an Invitational In-vitational in August involving in-volving teams from the Salt Lake area and Las Vegas. Coston talks with enthusiasm en-thusiasm of the sport of swimming. His approach is that it should be fun and not a sytree situation. He doesn't make it mandatory that they participate on a competitive basis but does expect the students to work ' and make good use of their time. He indicates that some team members are swimming swim-ming nearly two miles a night and the more they work the better they do.. He added that some team members would do well against swimmers of the same age and sex throughout the United : States. His obvious enthusiasm en-thusiasm for the sport began more than five year's family. His brother-in-law. was the recipient of a silver medal in the Montreal Meet and has coached on the same team with him. The team practices Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays from 4 to 6 p. m. and v those interested are invited to come and watch them work out. They play some water polo. The minimum; requirements to join the team is that one must be able to swim the length of the pool with no difficulty. |
