Elks Scholarships aid Students Presentation of Scholarship certificates awarded to $1,350 were awarded to outstanding and talented High School seniors who had entered the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks "Most Valuable Student Contest" at the Cedar City Elks Lodge Wednesday evening. Regina Peterson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Peterson, who won the right to represent Cedar High School in the State Competition where she placed llth, was the recipient of a Scholarship Certificate of $500. Rrent Slack, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Slack, won the right to represent the boys at the state level and recieved a Scholarship Certificate in the amount of $350. These two scholarship certificates were awarded through the State Elks Association. On the local level Mark L. Jones, son of Kerry Jones and Carolyn Nyman, was accorded a $150 scholarship. Other recipients included . Anne Hatch, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Conrad V. Hatch, $100; Lee Thurston, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Thurston, $100; Shirley Jo Beal, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Beal, $75, and Kristine Kay Messerly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Messerly, $75. All awards were made in the form of a certificate and can be used by the student upon entering a credited University or College of their choice for tuition, room and board, books or anything the college or university can furnish them. The awards were made during Elks National Youth. Week which began May 1. The week-long observance is the culmination of a yearlong year-long effort on behalf of Youth Activities in the State of Utah, according to Humbert Rosenberg, chairman of the project for the Cedar City Lodge. A total of 17 Lodges in Utah, throughout the year, dedicate a good portion of their resources to youth 01 the state, he said. Last year, Rosenbeig stated, a total of fi303 boys and 4584 girls paticipated 'in the Elks annual Hoop Shoot. In addition a total of 714 boys . and girls were considered as "Teenagers of the Month." Eight Lodges sponsored Boy and Girl Scout Troops and twelve Lodges sponsored spon-sored Little League baseball teams. All lodges participated in the Most Valuable Student Contest, an annual scholarship contest don-ducted don-ducted in cooperation with High Schools of Utah. This past year, $840,000 was distributed in scholarships by the Grand Lodge and many more dollars by State Associations and individual lodges. Rosenberg expressed his thanks for those who participated par-ticipated and assisted in this year's program.
