Show GasolineControl Meeting Called A public meeting to help determine what stand-by mandatory gasoline controls Utah should have will be held on Thurs., today, at the St. George County Courthouse Cour-thouse Auditorium from 7 -10 p.m. The meetings are being conducted throughout the State by the Utah Energy Conservation and Development Council as directed by Governor Scott Matheson. If the gasoline shortage in Utah deepens and the Governor's voluntary conservation program doesn't prove to save neough gasoline, some sort of mandatory controls will be needed. The Carter Administration has proposed closing gasoline stations from Friday noon to Sunday midnight. But indications are that they will likely allow states to develop alternative programs as long as the alternative can be shown to be as effective as the Administration's proposal. Mandatory weekend closing would be disastrous to Utah's tourist industry and promises to be a hardship hard-ship to gasoline retailers. Utahns can develop a plan which will conserve as much gasoline as weekend closing but without the sort of burdens and unequal sacrifices that weekend closing offers. The Governor has proposed a stand-by mandatory man-datory program which involves in-volves a four-phased prohibition of gasoline sales. |
