Show ONE MORE CHANCE FOR RAY CALDWELL Ray Caldwell, whose fame as a major league pitcher has become somewhat tarnished, tar-nished, is going to he given one more chance to shine by the owners of the Yankees. Caldwell's name appears on the list of pitchers taken to the southland by Bill Donovan, and friends of the pitcher say that he is going to make a valiant effort at a come-back. Last season Caldwell did not take care of himself. It is said he figured In escapades es-capades that would have justified the Yankee owners in fining him and keeping him on the suspended list for the entire season, but instead, the owners of the Donovanltes treated him like an errant son and the outside world heard little about the secret of Ray's inability to win ball games. Finally, after several warnings and a suspension of fifteen days, just at a time when the Yanks needed him most, Caldwell was suspended for the remain- j der of the season. When the Yankees made their last trip west Donovan heard that Caldwell : was in a hospital in St. Louis without funds, so he made arrangements with a railroad agent to furnish his hurler with traveling expenses to New York. But Ray didn't show up In New Yrork. Still, 1 he will get his chance in the spring if lie wants to take it. |
