Show TRACK 10 BASEBALL y TRIMLlSi Squads in Both Sports Will Begin Earnest Practice This Week. " With the basketball season over at the L. D. S. university, Coach Gertrge A. Ryuearson will direct his attention to tho spring sports. The outlook for winning win-ning baseball and track teams is exceedingly ex-ceedingly bright. "Ryuie" has several veterans back in harness on both squads, and oodles of- excellent green material is showing up to fill the gaps left, by departed athletes. The old heails iu baseball are Captain Rodney Winn, Sam Scott, Robert. Whit tier, Frank Iver-son, Iver-son, Milton Goodridge, Elmer Bean, Connie llayinoud and Kvan Taylor. Captain Cap-tain Winn played the outfield last year, but. is also at' home in the inner workings work-ings and may be shifted to an infield position unless some good men develop to cover the sacks. Scott and Whittier are also outficL men. Iverson and Goodridge work abV ternatelv on the mound and- play the in-field in-field when not pitching. They are both good men and heavy hitters and with proper coaching should develop into first-class inonndsmeu. Klmor Bean worked in the backstop position last, year and will undoubtedly hold down that. ,job. Haymond is an infield in-field man and is an excellent base stealer. steal-er. Taylor will not be ablo to participate partici-pate in' any league games, tint his ex-perience ex-perience with the national pastime should materially aid the new men. In track the veterans are Captain Dave Watts, Elmer Dean, Frank Iverson, Iver-son, John Cannon, LnMont Proece.aud Melvin Freebairn. Watts runs the quarter quar-ter and half mile, taking both events in the division meet last year. Bean also steps off the 440 in good time, and is useful in the weight events. He is husky and can heave the shot and discus dis-cus a considerable distance. His main fault is lack of form, but with careful training the big fellow should make the othor aspirants for honors in the weight events do some tall heaving. Iverson is a sprinter and weight man. He won his letter in the shot, and has been a member mem-ber of the relay team. Cannon participates partici-pates in the broad and high jumps and can also make good distance in the pole vault. Preece comes with a good record from the coast, where he regularly ran the mile under five minutes last season. He is a. member of the basketball squad and is in good condition at his winter floor work. Freebairn won third place in the Deseret gym marathon last, fall and has been training hard until two weeks ago, when be strained a tendon in his leg. A new man who has been eating up the distance on the Deseret track is Elgredge. He is a bike rider of (local reputation, having won the time piN . in the Memorial day road race lasf. spring. Other boys who have shown class in their preliminary training are Buchanan, Grav, Bird, Christensen, 01- J son, Oswald, Theddell, Woodruff and Nelson. Active training will start this vji with the return of the basketball men from the state tournament at Logan. |
