Show WESTMINSTER COLLEGE. Tbe campaign to obtain a $1,000,000 endowment for Westminster college goes on apace, ljut this essential sum cannot be amassed without tho patriotic support of the community. The value to Salt Lake of a denominational university uni-versity devoted to the task of perfecting perfect-ing young men and women in truly Christian scholarship cannot be overestimated. over-estimated. Even if we look only on the material side of such an institution we shall find that it will be of great benefit bene-fit to the city. The institution as it stands today, it is said, brings a yearly income to Salt Lake City of $100,000. The college has been growing rapidly. It now hs 129 students and, the services ser-vices of fifteen instructors arc required for the courses offered. In the last three years the student membership has nearly doubled. Facilities have become inadequate and must be increased. It' the institution is to meet the very evident evi-dent demand for its existence it must provide all the facilities of a great university. uni-versity. It roust have a boys' dormi tory, a gymnasium, library, scholarships. Although the college was established by the Presbyterians it is operated j equally in the interest of all evangelical ; denominations, and at present four de- , nominations are represented on the board of trustees. Speaking of the need and' value of such a university a prospectus recently issued says very justly: "To secure for this wide region of; our country, through a Christian college, in which the Bible is used as a text book for moral training and in which only Christian instructors are employed, : those great benefits of intellectual and . moral leadership combined, which have j made the New England and middle ; states such a power for good in our na- I tional history. Undoubtedly one of tho ; strongest agencies in securing to these i and other states the moral prestige of j so many noble and thoroughly educated i men and women has been the influence of the Christian colleges within their j borders." The presence of such a college in Salt Lake is an additional inducement to the parent who is attracted by the state's resources and who desires to give his children a religious education. |
