Show GLOUCESTER FLEET -TO RENUDT AMERICAN WASHINGTON, March in. Measures Mea-sures to keep the celebrated Gloucester fishing fleet of hundreds of small vessels, ves-sels, as well as the American fishing fleet in the Pacific, under the American flag, were considered today at a conference con-ference between Secretary Redfiedd and Commissioners Brent of the sJhipping board and Smith of the fisheries bureau. bu-reau. American fishing fleets on both oceans are said to be confronted with going under Canadian registry or forfeiting for-feiting many privileges at Canadian ports. Seven vossels in the Pacific-have Pacific-have already chitnged to Canadian registry regis-try and the shipping board is understood to have received many applications from the owners v of other fishing craft in both the Atlantic and Pacific for authority au-thority to surrender American registry. Canadian ports reported to be acting under orders of the dominion government, govern-ment, have refused to sell bait, coal, other supplies and even food to crews of American fishing craft unless the catch be sold in Canada instead of the United States. Tt is said here that the Canadian government gov-ernment wants the American boats to replace those sent to the war- zone for submarine patrol and in addition needs the catch which would otherwise go to American ports. Officials at today's conference are understood to favor introduction of the Chamberlain amendment to the shipping bill which failed at the last session, prohibiting the importation into the United States of fish from any foreign for-eign country unless under bond, as a retaliatory measure. |
