Show COii APPEARS rmcEuTi So-called Independents in Congress May Not Form Blockade. WASHINGTON, March 10. The possibility of a coalition organization agreement between Democrats and Republicans Re-publicans in the incoming house of representatives, rep-resentatives, which meets April 16, was considerably lessened todav in the opinion of many members W the announcement an-nouncement of Representative Schall, Progressive, of Minnesota, one of the five so-called independents, that he would not be a party to an independent indepen-dent measure movement which would block important legislation. As the bi-partisan plan originally was broached only to defeat a deadlock should the independents refuse to support sup-port either a Republican or a Democrat Demo-crat for speaker, leaders of both big parties tonight foresaw an abandonment abandon-ment of the movement. "While I am reserving ray right to vote independently," said Mr. Schall, "I am not going' to join a group of men and block legislation for the mere purpose of gaining patronage. Patriotism Pa-triotism means more to me than mere party victory, and T shall do my best to help expedite public .business." Republicans generally accepted the development as meaning an additional vote for Representative Mann for speaker. Mr. Schall spoke in behalf of the Republican national ticket in the last election, though he was elected as a Progressive because of local differences. dif-ferences. Many objections to the coalition plan were heard today among the Republicans, Republi-cans, who said it should be agreed to only as a last resort and a.rgned that the party, now in the course of reorganization, reor-ganization, could not hope to profit by a compromise with the Democrats. Both sides still claim a majority, both honing for the vote of Representative Represen-tative Martin of Louisiana, Progressive-Democrat. Representative Randall, Prohibitionist of California, and Representative Rep-resentative London, Socialist of New York, it is believed probablv will vote with the Democrats, and Representative-elect Puller, of Massachusetts, Progressive, Pro-gressive, with the Republicans. Announcement today by Governor Whitman that he will call a special election to select a successor to the late Representative Conrj' of the Fifteenth Fif-teenth New York district, was a web come development for the Democrats. They expect another Democrat will be elected, making the Democratic total 215. within three of euough to re-elect Speaker Clark. |
