A committee to deal with the matter, consisting of Mrs. W. F. Mea -kin. Mrs. G. B. Blakeley and Mrs. W. R. Tyndalt, wis appointed'. The problem of dealing with the tall and unsightly weeds on vacant lots and street parkings came up for discussion. In an effort to solve Ihe problem a committee com-mittee wes appointed to bring pressure to bear on property owners to clear away the weeds. It was suggested that the women work for an ordinance which would provide for , the assessing of non-residents and negil- gent residents to the amount necessary to pay for cost of clearing weed-grown j property within the city limits. The pending action of the commissioners commission-ers in the matter of securing a market site was discussed. A motion was carried car-ried which put the federation on record as favoring Kendall square for the market. ' At the close of the business session 1 Sergeant F. F. Wells of British Columbia, Colum-bia, recently returned from France, was introduced and gave a short talk on his experiences at the front. He spoke of the sacrifices being made by the women of France and Belgium, England and Canada. He told how one Canadian mother had sent her four sons to tight in defense of their country. Three of the boys found soldiers' graves on the battlefields of France, the fourth returned re-turned with an empty sleeve. The speaker speak-er said. "I am proud to say that was my mother." His message to the women of America was: "Do your bit. Work unceasingly for the Red Cross and get other women to do the same. Help with little kindnesses kind-nesses gifts, messages to the boys at the front." He made a touching plea for the cigarette, which, he said, comforts the exhausted soldier after an engagement as nothing else can. ' State W. C. T. U. Holds Interesting Session The twenty-seventh annual convention of the Woman's Christian Temperance union met in Tremonton on October 5 and 4. The meeting was called to order by the president, Mrs. C. A. Walker. Delegates Dele-gates from the unions over the state were present and were entertained In the honi&s of Tremonton. All delegates were guests at luncheon both days at the home of Mrs. J. Craig, and on Thursday all members were invited, and these social so-cial features were much enjoyed. After the opening devotional service, led by Mrs. W S. Flewelling of Ogden. a discussion, "Best Methods of Increasing Membership." was led by Mrs. Leota Kennedv. A paper, "Is Hie Work of the W. C. T. U. Finished With the Advent of Prohibition?" by Mrs. V. A. Sayer of Fait Eake, brought out important facts. National plans for patriotic service were given by Mrs. C. A. Walker as outlined by tile National W. C. T. U. committee on patriotic service, containing its recommendations recom-mendations of service plans for every state, county and local union, urging the conservation of food products and the health and morals of the men in the army and navy, and of civilians as well. The W. C. T. U. declares for "a living wage, an eight-hour day, and justice opposed op-posed to greed." Americanization of foreign-born women is advocated In co-op-i era tion with the federation of eighteen ! national temperance organizations. !
