Show PATRIOTISM. The officers and men of the Utah artillery ar-tillery regiment have given additional proof of their loyalty to the flag of their country by subscribing for $100,000 worth of the new Liberty loan bonds. This is one of the finest exhibitions of patriotism that has come to our notice. Xot only are these gallant sons of Utah ready to die in battle for the freedom of the world, but they are also willing to contribute part of their pay . to the cause which they, as part of tho United States army, will represent on the battlefields bat-tlefields of France and Belgium. If there is a man, woman or child within the confines of this commonwealth who is not proud of these boys then there is something lacking in the mental and moral makeup of the unfortunate who is out of tune with the times. How the skulking slacker must despise de-spise himself as the artillery boys march down the streets with swinging steps and with heads erect, proudly conscious con-scious that they aro doing their full duty by their parent?, their country I and their God! How the cowardly draft dodger will shrink and shrivel even iu his own estimation as he stands on the sidewalk and watches these young men make their farewell march through the streets of Salt Lake next Thursday on their way to entrain for Linda Vista! Who would care to be a slacker or draft dodger under such circumstances? Who would not rather be a bronzed and fearless young soldier sol-dier than a pale and trembling youth who fails to catch the spirit of the hour and is content to let others do his fighting! fight-ing! But four days remain before Utah's regiment will depart, not to return until the cause for which the' have volunteered volun-teered to fight has been w&n and the world is once more at peace. The prayers and well wishes of every true patriot will go with them and whether they be in the training camp or on the battle line news about them will be eagerlv and anxiously awaited by J;he folks at home. We have never yet seen a veteran of the civil war or one of the gallant fellows who enlisted when it became necessary to tear Cuba from the clutches of Spain who was not proud of the fact that he had not been found wanting when American manhood was put to the test under the proclamation procla-mation of the president to "rally 'round the flag." In after years the self-sacrificing soldiers of today will have the same, proud boast. Let us give them the honor that is 'due as they go forth and pray that they will soon return crowned with the laurels of victory. |
