Japanese students host party JENSEN SPECIAL-A very enjoyable evening was experienced by mothers and daughters as they were invited to be guests at a special Japanese party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lyn Morrill. The hostesses of the event were the exchange students from Japan, Karou Koizumi, 13, who is living with the Morrills, and Yukiko Katazama, 15, who is at the.home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Caldwell. The girls wore their native Japanese dress for the occasion and six other guests who had the dress wore them also. There was literature and silk scarves passed around so that all could have an insight on part of their culture. During the evening, we heard the language, saw the girls dance and everyone made a paper bird. Participants Par-ticipants heard music produced from a blade of grass, a judo act and heard a Japanese song. Evan Baker, who served a mission in Japan, came as a special guest to be the interpreter, and the girls were delighted to hear their own language spoken to them. The group asked questions and the girls shared their feelings. When asked what was very different to them about our American way, they replied that it was strange to enter a house with shoes on, especially on to a carpet. They were amazed to learn that we baked food in our ovens, as they go to the bakery for their pastries and have them for special occasions only. Japan schools are separated in boys and girls buildings and uniforms are the dress. The girls hair is cut to not touch the shoulders and the boys hair is cropped above the ear. In Japan, a drivers license is obtained ob-tained at age 18 but at 16 you can get a motorcycle permit. To own a car a family must have proof of parking space. Transportation is mostly done by walking, bus, train, or bicycle. Marriage is arranged by the parents, but the couple are allowed to choose each other and date. Girls are approximately ap-proximately 24 years old and boys a bit older when they marry. The girls really like American fast foods and have many of our chains in their own country like McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Dairy Queen, etc. The Japanese students will be returning to their country and families on Sunday, Aug. 24. The girls served Japanese food to the guests. There were 31 there to participate par-ticipate in the evening program. When Karou and Yukiko were asked what they though of America, their reply was "America is very wide, very beautiful and the people here are very neat." |
