"V . r ' ",V. , - 'W -J ..... - . i I - ..--i' , " ; - . r ' " -'-w- - NINETY-SIX-YEAR-OLD house falls under the force of a bulldozer which cleared the house from 500 South 100 West. The house was built by Stanley Ashton. 96-year-old Ashton house comes down Down comes the old and up goes the new as the 96 year-old house at First West and 500 South was bulldozed and removed last week. The adobe house was erected in 1894 by Stanley Ashton when he married his wife Elizabeth. Ashton came to Vernal when he was eight in 1871. Later, Stanley Ashton's father, William H. Ashton, moved into the house. He had two daughters, Murrel and D'On Ashton Thomas. Mrs. Thomas now lives in Brigham City, Utah. William H. Ashton was the first attorney in Vernal and brought the mail from Rock Springs, Wyo. He donated the land where Central Elementary School now stands. In 1930, Sarah Martinson moved into the house. The last three years the house has been vacant. Roy Krubsack lived in the house three years ago and said he doesn't know what is going to be built on the site of the old house. He also indicated that the adobe on one side of the house had gotten wet and was caving in. |
