Pioneers, Friday era Vernoj The Uintah Utes open their 1980 football season at home against the Lehi Pioneers, Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-league encounter. Lehi reached the semi-finals in the Class 2-A State Football Tournament and has many players returning from last year. The Pioneers have good size on the line with tackles, Mike Hamby, 6'4", 210 pounds; Jim Fackrell, 6'5", 220 pounds and John Geyerman, tight end, 205 pounds. The Pioneers also have Mark Jones and Wade Cardon at quarterback. Jones saw a lot of action at the quarterback position in 1979. Possible offensive starters for Uintah in the game with Lehi according to coach Monty Lee, are: Brent Hales, Dave Hardy, guards; Lonnie Williams, Roger Griffin, tackles; Kurt Case, center; Randy Smuin, tight end; Ralph Warby, Jeff Good or Pat Jenkins, quarterback; Dave' Emery, Mark Robb, running backs and Scott Peterson, split end. Other running backs, who may see action in the game are Rick Morton and Clark Emery. Morton burned himself in an accident on his motorcycle and has missed a few practices. "Scott Peterson has been a pleasing surprise at split end. He is a good hitter, catches the ball well and has good speed," stated Lee. Hales, Hardy, Good and Robb saw a lot of action last year. Case was a member of Uintah's sophomore team in 1978, but he moved in 1979 and has returned to Uintah for his senior year. When asked to comment on the 1980 version of the Uintah Ute football team, head coach, Curg Belcher, remarked, "They are young and inexperienced, but hopefully we will peak in time for the ball game Friday with Lehi. We have 80 athletes out for football. They are working real hard and they have a good attitude." Monty Lee is the offensive of-fensive coordinator and Chuck Henry is the line coach.
