Basin Bailers garner ?hirJ place in Vernal Journey The Basin Bailers, first place soft-ballers soft-ballers in the Vernal Men's Softball League, were defeated by Young's Paint, 10 to 6, in the first round, but the Basin Bailers of Vernal won four games in a row and placed third in theVernal Invitational, Saturday. Young's Paint jumped out to a 9-0 lead after five innings. The Basin Bailers scored six runs in the sixth inning and Kim Oliverson of Young's Paint blasted a homer in the sixth inning in-ning to make the final score: Young's Paint, 10 and Basin Bailers, 6. The loss dropped the Basin Bailers into the consolation bracket. The Basin Bailers won four games in a row as they defeated Tosco, 15 to 6; Ute Tribe, 10 to 3; Remund Dairy of Heber City, 19 to 8 and Outsiders of Vernal, 11 to 6. The Basin Bailers were toppled by Clover Club, 19 to 8 and placed third in the tournament. Vernal's Basin Bailers leaped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning on runs by Gary Monsen, Gary Huber, Doyle Huber, Scott Kavanaugh and Duane Merrell. Kavanaugh slugged a homer. Doyle Huber scored a run in the third inning to give the Basin Bailers a 6-0 lead. The Outsiders scored two runs in the third and three in the fourth inning to cut the Basin Bailers' lead to 7 to 5. Dave Sweat had a homer in the third inning. The Basin Bailers added two more runs in the fifth inning for a 9-5 advantage. Wayne Reid and Tim King singled. Gene Gurr drove in Reid and King with a triple. Sweat gained an inside-the park homer in the fifth inning in-ning to narrow the Basin Bailers' lead to 9 to 6, but Gary Huber was walked in the top of the sixth ining and was given a free ride home by his dad, Doyle Huber, who delivered a homer. Clover Club won the battle with the Basin Bailers by the score of 19 to 8 and advanced into the championship game with Strout. Clover Club had a 15 to 2 lead after five innings. Gary Moore hit back to back homers in the first and second innings. Kim Peterson and Dean Woodbury had homers in the third inning. Doyle Huber and Merrell scored runs in the sixth inning to cut Clover Club's lead to 15 to 4. Clover Club added one run in the sixth and three in the seventh inning to take a lead of 19 to 4. Moore gained his third homer of the game and Robert Werry added a circuit clout in the top of the seventh inning. Ken Sutton flied out in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ken Serre and Monson singled to drive in Kavanaugh. which made the final score: Cover Club 19 and Basin Bailers, 8. 7 U Cafe of Vernal toppled Homey J. of Fort Duchesne, 14 to 3 . n e hrst won its game with the uie r to a forfeit.
