Show Gary Moore of Clover Club was selected as the most valuable player in the Vernal Invitational, Saturday and the softball blasting performance that he staged in the tournamant almost guaranteed that he would be selected as the number one player. Moore's most outstanding game was Clover Club's 19 to 8 victory over the Basin Bailers, which placed his team in the championship contest. Moore delivered a homer in the first inning and hit another circuit clout in the second inning. He produced singles in his next two at-bats in the fourth and fifth inning. He pocketed his third home of the contest in the seventh inning. Six homers were slugged by the Clover Club crew in the game with the Basin Bailers. Robert Werry, Kim Peterson and Dean Woodbury slugged homers. Moore was 5 for 5 in the ball game. Clover Club's Moore was 2 for 4 in the first championship game with Strout. Moore blasted a homer and a single. Werry, Woodbury, Jeff Alexander, Clover Club and Don Solmonson, Strout. also blasted homers in the game. The Clover Club crew had four homers in the first encounter with Strout, but three of the four round trippers took place in the fifth inning. The first three batters in the inning, Moore, Werry and Woodbury, connected con-nected for home runs. Five homers were acquired in the first championship encounter between Clover Club and Strout, but in the second championship game 11 softballs were placed into orbit for home runs. Clover Club struck for seven homers and Strout connected for four round trippers. Clover Club had three homers in a row in the first championship game, but the chip crew decided that they could do better than three homers in a row. Moore, Werry, Woodbury and Kim Peterson hit four straight homers in the sixth inning. Bill Fisher and Don Solmonson hit back to back homers for Strout in the first inning, but they couldn't compete with the four-in-a-row performance by Clover Club. Solmonson and Woodbury each had two homers in the second championship encounter, and Solmonson performed a rare act in the game as he slid into first base. However, he was still out at first base Moore proved that his performance in the Clover Club Basin Bailer game wasn't a fluke as he blasted a homer, two singles and was walked two times. He was 3 for 4 in the championship ball game. Moore wasn't the only Clover Club softhaller who had outstanding games in the second championship encounter. Dean Woodbury was 4 for 4 in the game, lie blasted two homers and two singles. He also had a sacrifice fly Chris Heaton was 4 for 5 with three singles and a double. Kim Peterson and Jeff Alexander were 3 for 4 Alexander drilled two singles, a homer and had a walk Peterson slugged a homer and two singles. Rick Browning of Strout turned in an outstanding performance in a losing cause Browning w as 4 for 4 in the game and had three singles and a homer. Don solmonson and Ralph Wright had three hits each in the game. Solmonson belted the softball for two homers and a single and Wright had three singles. The final three games in the Vernal Invitational, Clover Club vs. Basin Bailers. Clover Club vs. Strout and Clover Club vs. Strout. were a home run fan's paradise as 22 homers were delivered and 17 out of the 22 circuit clouts w ere gained by Clover Club. Moore also played well in other Clover Club encounters. Moore scored two runs in Clover Club's 6 to 5 victory over Tw in Cinema in the first round. Moore was 3 for 3 in the second round game witli 7-11 Cafe. He had two singles and one double. Moore slugged two singles in the third round game with Young's Paint and scored three runs and smashed a homer in Clover Club's only loss of the tournament to Strout. Ted Taylor, who was the baseball coach at Uintah High School in the HH'iO's and early l!)70's, and his Basin Bailers teammates found out that the inning isn't over until the ball is in the mitt. Ben I.awson hit a fly ball to Gary Huber in center field and since it ap-jienrcd ap-jienrcd that Huber was going to nab the Kill, first baseman Ted Taylor; I lie second basemen and other members of the Basin Bailer team started walking off the field. The ball bit Huber's mitt, bill instead of catching it, he dropied it for a two base error. Uuvson advanced to second base because nolxxly was covering the bag However, the next baiter flied out to end the inning. |
