Show Union Cougars to clash with Bear River The Uintah Utes' second opponent in the 1980 football season will be their arch-rivals from Roosevelt, the Union Cougars. Uintah will host the Cougars on Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. The Utes' season-opener season-opener will be against 2-A power, Lehi and Union will host 3-A school Bear River, Friday at 7:30 p.m. "Our practices have been going fairly well. Our players have come a long way in a week. Battling for the quarterback position are seniors. Ted Hunting and Steven Robb, and junior Ron Ward. Robb play ed quarterback as a sophomore and Hunting has some junior varsity experience. Ward played sophomore and junior varsity football last season at Rigby, Idaho," stated Jay Omcr. Union's head football coach. Omer added. "Seniors. Bart Butcher, Juan Shields, Bart Stubbs; junior, Tracy McMullins and sophomore, Trevor Roberts, are competing for the running back positions. We have quite a few running backs. Our line is not settled, yet. We haven't decided who will be plaving where on the line. Our players are inexperienced, but we have better speed overall on the line and in the backfield than we have had before." Omer's assistant coaches on the varsity team are Brad Monks and Carlos Reed Dennis Toland is the head sophomore football coach. Players returning to the Union team, who play ed some last season, are: Bart Butcher. Juan Shields, running backs; Troy I.arsen, receiver and Cary Horrocks, center. There are also a number of let term en returning to the Union team. After the games with Bear River and Uintah, the Union Cougars will host 1-A school. Altamont. Sept. 12. The first league game for the Cougars will be against Morgan in Roosevelt on Sept. 19. The Union crew will battle Wasatch on the road, Sept. 26 and will clash with Intermountain in an away contest on Oct. 3. Union will host Hurricane in a non-league game on Wednesday, Oct. 8, and will battle Grantsville in Roosevelt, Thursday. Oct. 16. The Cougars will clash with the Pioneers in Ixhi Oct. 24. |
