ANSWER: Several new approaches have been effective in the early discovery of breast tumors and cancer. One, 'of course, is the frequent self examiniation. Another is called mammography, or more simply, the chest X-ray. A statistically significant difference in survival was found only in women over 50, whose breast cancer mortality was reduced by at least one-third. one-third. X-rays do have their dangers. But now, the new Uintah County Hospital is pioneering some new X-ray techniques that reduce the danger of this method to 10 percent of past levels. Now a mammography at our hospital exposes you to no more radiation than you would get from the sun in your back yard. It's a new approach, and we are currently the only hospital in Utah to offer this advanced service. What this all means is that now you can regularly take advantage of the mammography without fear of too much, radiation. |
