There is more than the usual amount of Interest manifested in the Woman's , Amateur championship this year. Heretofore the fair Diana with the highest score in the Grand American Handicap was awarded tho championship crown. The women didn't always shoot from tho same mark and one can't very well award a championship In a handicap handi-cap race. Therefore the feminine members of the trapgun brigado will shoot from 3 6 yards this time and make a real championship out of tho race. The event will be hold on August 14 classification da.y in the Grand American Handicap Trapshootlng tournament. Kach entrant will shoot at 100 targets.' There will be two trophies. There will also bo two trophies for the women who shoot In tho Grand American Ameri-can Handicap. Tho firs woman to enter the championship cham-pionship event halls from Lima, Ohio. She is ."'.. T. Randall and lives at 318 . . Nortn Scott street. This Is Mrs. Randall's Ran-dall's first attempt' In tho woman's championship and the Grand American Hrmdirnp. About a. dozen women have been shooting in the Grand American for a number of years, hut Stony Mc-Llnn, Mc-Llnn, the manager of the American Trap-shooting Trap-shooting association, Is confident that with renewed Interest in trapshootlng there will be at least twenty-flvo women on the firing lino. Tt is to be expected that all the women who won state championship titles will participate In tho event and there are a number who failed to win the stale titular races who are expected to turo up in Chicago seeking glory that is national. na-tional. HE American Amateur Trapshoot-r Trapshoot-r 1 1 ing championship at single tar-I tar-I gets will be shot at tho South JL Shore Country club, Chicago, 111., Wednesday afternoon, August 13. This is the feature event of the Grand American Handicap Trapshooting tournament. tour-nament. It is a championship in every sense of the- word. As an event for champions the winner Is rightfully heralded aa "the champion of champions." In every state there is a championship trapshooting tournament, the winner of which is eligible to shoot in the American Ameri-can Amateur Trapshooting championship. The runner-up is eligible to shoot in the event in the absence of the champion. Every shooter in the United States and Canada has an opportunity to win the title, but it is necessary to prove first that he is best in his state-Since state-Since 1906 the amateur championship has been shot for, and in that time no shooter has bean fortunate enough to put over two victories. Three shooters have an opportunity at this time of doing that trick. They are: E. AY. Varner of Nebraska, Ne-braska, Mark Arie of Illinois, and Frank Troeh of Washington, three of tho most expert shots in the world.- Varner won the championship in 1913, Troeh In 1916, and Arie in 1917 and all are seeking more glory this year. In winning the championship of Washington, Wash-ington, Troeh broke 298 out of 300 targets tar-gets the best score of the year. Arie to win the championship of Illinois only missed five targets in 300. Seventeen other champions broke 290 or better to win, and the Michigan champion, Skinner, Skin-ner, broke 296. About the Champs. It Isn't out of the way to write a few things about some of the champions and the runners-up to give an idea of thjp merits of the men. Osborne, in Massachusetts; Massa-chusetts; Troeh, in Washington, and Chezik, in Nort.i Dakota, each have won the championship of their respective states four times. Osborne and Troeh came through in 14. 16, 18 and 19, while Chezik came through In 14, 17, 18 and 19. Chatfleld has won the championship of Arkansas three years running. Keillcy won in Utah in 15, 17 and 19. Morgan in Marvland-District of Columbia, and Foord. 'in Delaware, won the titles last year and this. Seavey, in Oregon; Piatt, in New Jersey; Arie. in Illinois, and Reed, In New Hampshire, won In 17 and 19. Edens, In Arizona, and Wright, in New York, won in 14 and 19, and Burr, in Vermont, won in 15 and 19. This is best proof that there will bo high-class trapshooters in the national championship champion-ship event. It is worth noting that Heer of Oklahoma, Okla-homa, and Tomlin of New Jersey, the winner and runner-up for the national title' last year, are both runners-up this year. Others who finished second In the state tournament are: Key, Mississippi, champion in 14, 15 and 18; Randall, Maine, champion in 15, 16 and 17: Rnr-clav, Rnr-clav, Vermont, champion In 16. 17 and IS; Chamberlin, Connecticut, champion in 16; Melius, California: Dixon, Missouri, and Clarke of Massachusetts, champions In 1917; Hanshorough. Florida, champion In 18; and O'Brien. Montana, who won the championship of Oregon in 1916. It will be noted that in case some of the champions cannot attend there will be some likely second-string men. Young and Old. Just a few otner thints worth mentioning mention-ing about men who are in the national championship race.' Freeman, the Geor-g'a Geor-g'a champion, is a former professinna 1. Ohio Williams of Mlss'ssippi is t.evond t te three score of years mark nr d iuel-dentally iuel-dentally is a grandfather. WaUiron. Maine champion, is an unknown quantity. quanti-ty. He shot at 500 targets in 1917 sod average 88 per cent. In 191 R ho shot at 125 targets and only mi-sed one. Sam Vance, champion of eastern Canada, has won that title four times, but this Is the first time recognition has been given. Mark Arie. Illinois champion, and Nic Arie, Texas champion, -are brothers.
