Show 0. 5. PilES TO Nine Machines Will Make Start for West Coast on Wednesday. MINEOLA, X. Y., Aug. 9. Xine biplanes, known as the 'all-America pathfinders, ' ' w ill start on a flight from' Uazclliurst field to San Francisco next. Wednesday, under tho auspices of the war department and the air service, it was announced today. The itinerary embraces stops at 171 cities in fifteen states and covers -11S3 miles. The objects of the flight include an educational campaign designed to show the people the actual workings of an aero- squadron; recruiting for every branch of the military service; establishment estab-lishment of aerial mail ways for government gov-ernment mails; obtaining miltary information infor-mation for the air service; advantage of establishing radio stations along the route; testing aerial radio phones, and obtaining information on which to base recommendations for the placing of steel hangars. r.aso stops are scheduled for the following fol-lowing cities along the itinerary; Philadelphia, Phil-adelphia, llarrisburg, Pittsburg. Columbus, Colum-bus, - Indianapolis, 6t. I.ouis, liantoul, 111., Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, St. Paul, Fargo, Jamestown, -4'isniarck, Miles City, Tncoma, Groat Falls and Helena, Mop ; Wallace, Idaho; Spokane. Spo-kane. Seattle, Tacuma, Portland, Salem, Eugene and Jacksonville, Ore.; Redding, Sacramento and San Francisco, Calif. The squadron will fly directly from here to Columbus, at which city it is expected ex-pected to arrive on August IS. The biplanes are equipped with high-powered high-powered serouau t ieal motors, designed to facilitate pathfinding ami research. A convoy, consisting of motor trucks, observation and touring cars and niotor-cveles. niotor-cveles. will folluw the route taken bv the air squadron and transport equipment. equip-ment. Couimunieation between the airplanes and -the cities at which stops are to lie made will be established by means (if radio phones, and wireless renorts of the flight will be sent to Washington. The unit, includi1' the aviators, will consist of twenty-two officers and eighty cnlbted men. |
