Show EIGHT KILLED II ELEVATOR BUST; Score of Others Injured in Ontario Disaster; Loss Nearly Two Millions. PORT C'OLBOEXE, Ontario, Aug. 9. Eilit persons were killed and a score were injured, seven of Ihem seriousl' in an explosilion which wrecked the large government grain elevator on the Welland canal here this afternoon. Four of the bodies have been recovered. The financial loss is estimated at $1,800,-000. $1,800,-000. Spontaneous combustion is believed be-lieved to have caused the explosion. The superintendent of the elevator, R. S. Harvey, was among the injured. The exptosion occurred shortly after the elevator hands returned to work following their dinner hour. The concussion con-cussion shook the whole town and windows win-dows in nearby buildings were smashed. Flames spread through the wreckage but because of fireproof construction they soon burned out." The barge Quebec, moored at an elevator ele-vator lfg, was smothered under a pile of wreckage as she reeled 'over and a huge rent was torn in her side bv a block of concrete. To prevent her sinking sink-ing she was towed outside" the breakwater break-water and beached. The elevator had a capacity of more than 2,(X)0,000 bushels and the bins were said to be about one-third filled with grain, mostly wheat. |
