Show Tin ni EIIHlSTOd Takes Newport Final; Australians Aus-tralians Show Skill in Doubles- XEWPORT, R. I., Aug. 9. William T. Tilden of Philadelphia defeated William M. Johnston of San Francisco, 7-0, 8-6, 6-1, tolay in the final round of the tennis singles tournament at the Casino. Tildon's game wa perfect, while Johnston John-ston made errors at critical times. Johnston's John-ston's back hand was his weak point. Gerald Patterson and Norman E. Jlrookes, Australian tennis players, won the final round of the doubles from Wallace Wal-lace F. Johnson and Vincent Richards, 6-1, 6-;t, 3-G, 7-o, in the tournament for the Newport cup at the Casino. Of the two Australians, patteivson played the more strenuous game and made a total to-tal of '61 placements most of thern won by smashes. Brookes had some hard luck in having his strokes go cue by scarcely more than an inch. The teamwork of the pair was remakahle, Richards played the bet ter tennis of the American pair and mnde a number of neat placements. His service was much more difficult to handle than his partner's. part-ner's. Johnson depended largely upon a lobbing game.
