The Lopran club today clinched tlie pennnnt in the Cache A'alley league by defeating tho tmithfield nine by a score of ) to ilorb Munouk pitched tho Collegians to the champioiship. He was opposed by I'd Willett, ohif flmger of the Ki-x-Lurg champs of the Snaho Iiivcr league. Today's victory for Logan ensures that club the championship, regardlesH of tho outcome of games yet to be played. Tho Logan Baseball club has led the Cache Vallcv league race since the latter lat-ter part of June, and before that time the Collegians -were in and out of first place since the league race started, however, during that time the lead of the Logan club bad been very small, most ot the time only a margin of one game separating the leaders and the second place club. The team has played excellent semipro ball, but the honors in this department are shared alike with all tho other clubs in the Cache circuit, which have also played stellar ball. Joseph R. JonROn of the Agricultural college organized the Logan club, but left the first of July for Berkeley, Calif., and turned the reins over to John Coburn. Co.burn as a pilot has never seen his club out of first place in the league standing. On the Logan lineup are many of the league's leading performers. Xorman Helton, playing a fast fielding game at shortstop, is also the league's leading hittci, batting close to the .'iSi mark. Stuhbv Peterson is the league's leading outfielder, having a peifect record. He has accepted thirty-four chances, and some of these have been sensational catches. Peterson is also the leading sacrifice hitter of the league. Herman Hemmer, who plays the initial sack and occasionally right field, is the leading three-base hitter. Mose Stiefel at second sec-ond is a fast pivot man for the infield, and with Len Andrus at third the infield in-field iB one of the fastest combinations in the state. Louis Falck, Dick Kom-ney, Kom-ney, Peterson and Hemmer have held down the outfield jobs during most of the games and have all starred. Before the Cache league clubs began resorting to professional pitching. Or-ville Or-ville Nelson was the leading heaver. He pitched consistent ball all the way, and was helped in the mound work by Parley Par-ley Christensen and Ralph Smith, also local men. At present Gene Caldcra is the class of the league and the noith end as a pitcher, and during his stay in Logan ne has received offers from Coast league clubs and eastern teams as well. Herb Manouk of San Francisco Fran-cisco is the club's latest acquisition in the way of a pitcher. Glen Dee is the receiver, and is still on the job, in spite of numerous minor injuries to nis throwing hand. ' The Logan club will meet the fast Salt Lake Steel and Iron team at Bonneville Bon-neville park at 3 o 'clock Sunday afternoon. |
