Show GERMAN IS LARGELY SPOKEN IN SWEDEN LONDON. Oct. 26. In Sweden one is disagreeably struck by the number of people who speak German. When asked a question in English, a .Swede, bo he a policeman or a civilian. Invariably countered coun-tered in German. At hotels and restaurants restau-rants few porters and waiters underhand under-hand or speak English. In bookshops English hooka and magazines are few, while German are largely represented. It Is different In Norway. English is taught at school, and nearly everybody one meets, from the porter at the station to one's neighbor at the dinner table, speaks English fluently. The windows in the bookshops are fuil of English and American publications. The treatment of English speaking visitors vis-itors had more of hearty hospitality and kindliness In Norway than In Sweden. |
