Show SETS NEW RECORD FOR PLANE FLIGHT NEW YORK, Oct. 2G. Driving a de-Maviland de-Maviland airplane equipped with a Liberty Lib-erty motor. Sergeant Coombs of Hazel-hurst Hazel-hurst field today won the thirty-six mile race from Belmont Park race track around the stattue of Liberty In upper New York bay, and back to the courso, in 15 minutes, min-utes, 30 seconds. This Is a new record for this event, which was first won by John B. Moisant in a fifty horsepower Bieriot, eight years ago. The initial race was completed in 2-1:38. Six other de Havlland planes took part in today's contest and all of them finished fin-ished within thirty seconds after the winning win-ning flier had crossed the line. The second machine, which came from Roosevelt Roose-velt field, was about twenty feet behind the winner. The Liberty race was one of many stirring stir-ring events which made up the program of the army aviation and athletic carnival carni-val held by the. first provisional wing, I". S. air service, at the Belmont park race track for the benefit of the national na-tional aeronautical commit ten. The receipts re-ceipts will be used to purchase athletic equipment for aviators. |
