Show PASSENGERS CALM BEFORE STEAMER TOOK THEM DOWN VANCOUVER, B. C, Oct. 26. Passengers Passen-gers aboard the Sophia were cairn a short time before the steamer carried them to their deaths, according to a wireless message mes-sage sent last night from the doomed vessel. The message was sent by Captain Locke to the Canadian . Pacific railroad offices here. It was received this morning. Captain Cap-tain Locke said: "Steamer Cedar and three Juneau gas boats standing by. Unable to take off passengers on account of strong northerly norther-ly gale andbig sea running. The ship is hard and fast on the reef with her bottom bot-tom badly damaged. She is not taking water. Unable back off reef. Passengers Passen-gers are normal." Nearly all members of the Sophia's crew were Canadians. Captain Locke, master, was one of the oldest navigators on the northern coast. Captain Jerry Shaw was first officer, J. F. Gosse. second officer, and A. Murphy third officer. All four resided in Victoria. A Alexander, Vancouver, Van-couver, was chief gunner. |
