Show OLD CARBURETERS CAOSEOTTROUBLE Lack of Motor Pep Due to Improperly Designed Fuel Feed. Many oar owners write to Motor Ago about the trouble they arc having with ears built some three or four years ago, due to irregular running, Jack of power and similar eauses, yet they have completely com-pletely overhauled the whole job ami kuow it is in good shape. They have checked the ignition and know the timing tim-ing is right ; they have assured themselves them-selves that the gasoline syntem is "working "work-ing as it shoujd; and, in J'aet, everything every-thing is tuned to eone, ert pitch, but, in spite of all this, the ear does not seem to have the ginger it should. Vsunjlv the complaint is that the engine en-gine misses intermittently. Jf the carbureter car-bureter is set to run properly at low speed, then there is trouble when trying to run at high speed; if the high speed is correct the ongine will not throttle down as it should. Tt seems next to impossible to got a setting that will do for all conditions, and to operate with any degree of satisfaction at all the carbureter has to be set altogether too rich, resulting in soothed plugs, carbon, car-bon, etc. Perhaps you have an engine that acts that way? If you happen to, make up ynvr mind the carbureter has to be changed. Many of the carbureters brought out several years ago arc not capable of handling the present fuel correctly. You need not necessarily change the make of carbureter car-bureter but get the later model of the instrument. Like all other phases of motor ear development the carbureter makers have made some wonderful strides in designing carbureters, and you cannot expect the instrument that was built to handle a more volatile fuel to take care- of the low-grade fuel we buy now. The later carbureters pie meant to handle this. Try a new instrument in-strument on your car and you wil be surprised at the increased performance. Another point in connection with the gasoline systems is thc method of feeding feed-ing the fuel to the carbureter. Manv of the older cars have pressure feed, and as the pressure pump supplying the air to thc tank at the rear gets worn, its effect is lessened and the supplv 6f fuel is not what it should be. Also, there are so many chances for air leaks that it is a wonder- that somo of the system? function at all. Tf you discover dis-cover this to be the source of your irregular ir-regular running, fit. a vacuum tank on the front of your dash. You wil never have to worry about pressure and air leaks then. |
