The United States lighthouse tender Cedar made an unsuccessful attempt to get to the side of the Sophia after she staKed to sink, according to a wireless message from the Cedar received here tonight. The body of one woman and four upturned boats were the only signs of the Sophia left at daylight today. The message from the Cedar follows: "U. S. S. Cedar, via Cable Steamer 1 Burnslde, Cedar Standing by at 7 p. .m, 1 24ar but impossible to get near vessel jpraccount of northerly gales and heavy H T3eas. About 270 passengers lost. Cedar got within 400 yards yesterday but an-chors an-chors would not hold and sea drove '"her away. Last night the Sophia told us that they were sinking. Cedar made full 1 flpeed to her through blinding snow storm could not find her. Last heard from BoJ-ca was at 5 o'clock. No survivors j so far as known.
