Show ELMER DEWEY FREED BY PAnM BOARD Sentence of Slayer of Sergeant Ser-geant John H. Johnston Is Commuted. Elmer L. Dewey was yesterday made a free man, the state board of tardons commuting his sentence to take effect at once. Dewey was convicted in the Third district court on October 27, lfti:i, of murder in the second degree for the killing kill-ing of Serpeant John Ii. Johnston of the police force, and sentenced to serve fourteen years in the state prison. The killing' occurred at a hotel on Wept Temple street between First and Second South streets. Dewey, it appeared in the trial, had been drinking and had a quarrel quar-rel with his wif, who called upon the proprietor of the hotel, who in turn notified noti-fied the police. Sergeant Johnston wan sent on the cae and forced open the door of the room occupied by Ijp.wvy and his wife. In the scuffle that followed Sergeant Ser-geant Johnston was shot., dying; later. Sentences terminated were those of O.s-car O.s-car Beree. George AVilson. Herbert Davis, Floyd Holliman, L. Callahan, C, A. Young, P. Kutrufenes and 1-1. Houtjhton.
