Show CIIO VEGETABLES WILL BEJEXHIBITED Prizes Aggregating $10,000 in Thrift Stamps to Be Distributed. In line with a conservation movement move-ment under the auspices of the national na-tional war vegetable canning campaign, cam-paign, with headquarters at Washington, Washing-ton, D. C, which has offered $10,000 in thrift stamps as prizes for display of canned goods, to be distributed among the different states of the Union, the city and state committees co-operating will hold a competitive exhibition of canned goods at the Civic Center quarters, quar-ters, 149 Regent street, starting Monday morning at 9 o'clock and to end Thursday at noon. There are no qualifications for entrance other than that the eanned entries be the product of the exhibitor. Five prizes are to be awarded, and it is hoped by those in charge this first endeavor of the government gov-ernment to encourage the canning of vegetables will be met with wholehearted whole-hearted co-operation on the part of housewives and women of the city and the state committee,' Mrs. Jeanette Hyde, chairman, working under un-der the state council of defense, and tho city committee, Mrs. C. H. Mc-Mahon, Mc-Mahon, chairman, are joining their efforts ef-forts to make this contest a big success, suc-cess, and urge women who have canned vegetables this year not to hesitate in entering the contest. Mrs. Melvin Miller Mil-ler has ben appointed to have charge of the exhibit on Regent street, and she will be on hand to receive entries until the specified time for closing. The exhibits will be judged according accord-ing to appearance, variety and packing. The judges will be Mrs. O. J. P. Widt-soe, Widt-soe, Miss Leah Jennings, Mrs. William Reed, Miss Lucy Van Cott and Miss Perry. Prize winners will be selected either Thursday afternoon or on the dav following. Tho conservation committees realize that the exhibitions will not b as perfect per-fect as last year because of the poor quality of vegetables grown this year. According to women of the civic' center, cen-ter, the standard of canning vegetables, as well as cannin- fruit, has declined' from that, of last year, but, notwithstanding notwith-standing this, they hope to conduct a creditable display of the housewives' conservation in the city and state. Prize-winning exhibitions will be on display in the women's building at the Utah state fair. |
