Show BEET GROWERS WILL SEEK Hlffl PIES Amount Will Not Be Fixed, However, Until Further Figures Are Obtained. 1 Special to The Tribune. PROVO, Jan. 5. The meeting held here this afternoon under the auspices of the County Farm bureau was attended by about 150 beet growers. President J. "vV. Alleman presided. He stated that the object of the meeting was the consideration considera-tion of the price to be asked for beets for 1918, as the growers feel they should have more tfian the 58.50 agreed upon by some of the growers at Salt Lake some time ago. D. S. Jennings, county agricultural agent, explained that James W. Jones, government expert, was not in attendance because lie could not receive permission from the government to use figures on the cost of sugar production (which are now in course of preparation) till they are published. Mr. Jones, therefore, did not think he could be of much service at the meetiner. Mr. Jennings also stated that President D. D. McKay of the state bureau had excused himself from attending attend-ing till government action on the production produc-tion of sugar, now under consideration, is determined upon. W. J. Chad wick of the beet growing committee presented a report of the cost of producing beets in 1917, collected from thirty-five locals in the county. It showed an average cost of $S6.77 per acre to grow beets; the average yield wass 11 1-0 tons per acre, and at the price obtained, $7 a ton, it showed a loss of $9.07 an acre. A number of speakers advocated that 510 a ton for beets be asked for the 191 S crop, others that no. definite action be taken till the cost of the production of sugar be ascertained. The feeling was that the government should be sustained In the production of sugar, as in all other issues, but there was also a desire to secure a fair share of the profits to the beet growers, compared with the profits realized by the sugar manufacturers. After an extended discussion a motion by C. L. Warnick was carried. It provides pro-vides that three delegates, to be appointed appoint-ed by the County Farm bureau, be sent to the State Farm bureau meeting at Salt Lake on January 15, and that they ask for a reconsideration of the agreement agree-ment to produce beets for ?8.50 a ton, which was entered into by some of the representatives of farm bureaus at a former meeting; that the cost of production produc-tion be ascertained, and a price for beets be asked which shall be fair to the beet growers and the sugar manufacturers, based on the cost of beets, the cost of the manufacture of sugar and the price of sugar. Brief addresses were made by President Presi-dent Walter P. Whitehead and Secretary Arch M. Thurman of the Provo Commercial Commer-cial club and W, E. Stoker, urging the' production of vegetables for the Goddard Packing company's plant and showing the benefits of the packing plant to the county. |
