Show ITtJiCSlTlfi Only Basketball Men Show Spirit of Willingness to Exert Themselves. The athletic situation at the University Univer-sity of Utah has uuJergono but slight change during the past week. The same half-hearted atlitude of track and baseball base-ball men continues, although the basketball bas-ketball boys are working hard to redeem re-deem themselves for the defeat suffered recently iu Provo. The next game tor the basketball team will be I'layed Friday Fri-day in Logan aeainst the B. Y. C. team. On the following dav the t tah boys will plav the A. C. group. If Utah loses either game it wiU probably lose the state basketball championship, as the Brigham Young university team is going strong and recently defeated the scrappv B. Y. C. team. According to Coach Nelson H. J-or-ren, there' will be need of greater activity ac-tivity ou the part of baseball men if the Utah bovs wish to be represented in that branch of sports this year. Nor-gren Nor-gren said vesterdav that he would not waste his ' time with baseball if the plavers did not tike a serious attitude. According to him, baseball is a strenuous strenu-ous game and requires conscientious training, just as track or football does. It will be necessarv, he said, for candidates can-didates for the club to devote three hours dailv to the game before Utah would have a team worthy of the name. Brighter for Track. Track is somewhat brighter. A number num-ber of men have been showing up spasmodically spas-modically for that branch of athletics, but not yet enough to make the coach jubilant. Among those who have been going out regularlv are Captain Parry, Creed Haynior.d, " HopkiuSj Robbins, Nelson, Leslie Frazer and Vi'inwaJd. the half-miler. Utah has an excellent chance for a good track team this year. The material is at baud, and the coach is said to be as strong in track work as in football. A little more support from the students is necessary. Owing to the rupture in the faculty of the university and tbe loss of several sev-eral basketball Uars this year, not to mention the proposal that baseball be rubbed off the list of university sports, the students are more or less at sea. The athletes are paying little attention either to studies or athletics, it is said, excepting the basketball players, who are working like Trojans to redeem themselves for their Frovo defeat. Basktbnll players are loyally supporting support-ing Coach Norgrc-u. They figure that nothing nut the winning of the state championship and then the conference title will suffice for the palato cf the coach. Coach Is Sick. Coach Norgren himself is putting up a game fight for his men. The coach, according to the physician attending him, is officially fi "sick-a-bed man. Nevertheless he goes to the gymnasium everv afternoon with his ear iu a bandage and directs the play of his men. Th" abbess which was recenr'y removed from the coach's auditory portal por-tal has weakened him considerably, i'.e does not. look like the old fighting w.'r-rior w.'r-rior from Chicago, but his spirit remains re-mains with him just the same. The final game of the basketball season sea-son iu Utah will be played Saturday. March 13. unless Utah wins the state championship, in which event Utah will play the winner of the Colorado ehani- ! pionship f.'r the conference title. 0:i Starch 13 the university will tackle the B. Y. U. again. The players and Coach Norgren are determined to win that game by a big score in order to show their superiority over tho Utah cunty bunch. The players are also striving hard to get in excellent condition for the northern trip at the last ot this week. They will take on two of the fast teams of the state there on successive suc-cessive nights and two good string squads will be uecded by Utah 'to win. To university students it looks well-nigh well-nigh iinpo?si"b!o for Utah to take both games, but it is about an even bet that thev will do it. Utah oirit. when aroused, is noted for its bulldoggedness and the Crimson placers upparcnTlv have their spirit, on edge now. Captain Heal, Udv. Clarke. Van Telt. tiuggori. Abbott. Knowlton. Komuey, Briggs and MiTutyro will make the trip for Utah. The players will remain in Logan for the two days. They will play the church school team in B. Y. C. gymnasium gym-nasium Friday night and tho Aggies Saturday night in tho A. C. gvmnasuim. Officials have not been decided upon for the game, but AYatson of Web-r academy will probably be one of them. Watson lms won a home with Utah fans this year through his fairness and uu-biaed uu-biaed judgments on fouling. A feature fea-ture of " the two fray s will be tho use of the A. A. U. rules in the 1). X. i '. ?amo and the use of collegiate mles in the Aggies battle. 0ving to the frequent, shifts in rules t lie university is under a handicap and has had more points scored against it ou fouls tins vpur th'iu field baskets while plav" A. A. U. rules. |
