Charging Great Britain with having violated the neutrality of the United States; with having brought this nation upon the verge of a break with friendly nations and with having interfered unwarrant-odlv unwarrant-odlv with our commerce, Representative Deitrich of Massachusetts offered a resolution res-olution in the house today asking that the president be authorized to require assurances of Great Britain within sixty days that such practices shall cease. Great Britain's actions in the present pres-ent war have created a condition in the Atlantic ocean which threatens to involve in-volve the United Stats in complications with friendly nations." the Massachusetts Massachu-setts representative declared today. "She has recently entered into an offensive of-fensive and defensive alliance with Japan, which, in time of war with either nation, will surround the United States with an immense naval force and at least drive us from the Pacific. "She has violated the neutrality of China, in which the United States has a vital interest, by sending her troops, in conjunction with Japanese forces, to Kiaochow. "The fact that she is drilling troops for the war in Canada makes that colony col-ony subject to the dangers of attack and constitutes it a danger to the United States. "England's attitude in Mexico has created an ill feeling toward the United States, whose neutrality since the outbreak out-break of the war she has violated many times by using the Panama canal zone and waters imder the control of this country for signal and supply stations. "Again, regardless of the neutrality of the United States, Great Britain has obtained from lands and water oVer which this government has jurisdiction at least one submarine war vessel, many large guns, quantities of ammunition and armored automobiles. "England has also circulated false statements in this country concerning the nations with which she is at war, with a view to inflaming public sentiment sen-timent here against them. "She has delayed, interfered with and seized American ships bound for neutral ports and has strewn with mines parts of the high seas, endangering the commerce of the United States and has misused the flag of the United States." |
