NEBEKER ORDERS SPECIAL RIFLES While Agents Make Ef-;; Ef-;; fort to Secure Peaceful Arrest of Outlaws Marshal Mar-shal Continues Prep-s Prep-s arations for Battle He Thinks Is Inevitable. Special to The Tribune. BLUFF. Utah, Feb. 27, via Dolores, Colo. It now seems probable that the attack on the Indians, in a final effort to-. to-. arrest Old Polk and his son, Tse-Na-Gat, : will not be made until Monday or Tues- day. The delay in the battle which was scheduled to begin several days ago has been caused by advices from Washing-ton, Washing-ton, where the officials of the Indian office of-fice have been making every effort to ae- - cure a peaceable settlement of the trouble. The loss of a key to the shackles locked on the Indians taken captive a week ago was the cause last night of an attempt on the part of the prisoners to escape. ; One of the guards had examined the shackles, and In stooping over the key dropped from his pocket and was not missed until later. A search was started, start-ed, the key finally being found In the sock of Jody, one of the Piutes. The deputies then began -a cross-examination u, of the Indians, and have come to the con-" con-" elusion that an escape had been planned by the renegades. IS Visit Butler's Wash. -n The discovery of the key followed the conclusion of a conference of the officials, offi-cials, all (fetalis of which have been rigidly rigid-ly ly suppressed. A visit of the deputies was made yesterday afternoon Into the But-u But-u ler's wash region, where the Piutes gave unmistakable aigns of their hostility. To complicate matters, the telephone line which connects Bluff with the rest of the world "went out" early In the even-' even-' Ing, and could not be repaired until to-: to-: ;r day. At present, storms make telephone communication extremely difficult, and communication may be indefinitely Inter-rf: Inter-rf: rupted again at any moment, fr:- The plot of the prisoners strengthens fr' the almost indisputable theory that the 3 Indians who gave themselves up to Maris Mar-is ' ehal Nebeker and his men Sunday and , Monday did so with the sole Idea of esoap-rjf; esoap-rjf; lng with posse secrets. Havane. who established this when he attempted to '.it: escape and was shot by the guards, was E1;1 burled yesterday afternoon, as was Jack, tthe Piute killed Sunday, whose body was iti'i i discovered In the sand Thursday by &ur-geon &ur-geon John Btavely. er Prisoners Sullen. tffI', The prisoners are as sullen as ever. Upon a woman now rests the hope of a ; peaceful ending' of the Piute uprising, i Arriving here by chance, and held at Marshal Xeheker'e orders for reasons of safety, the "Wade brothers' rart-y may cause the intervention of Mrs. John WetheriH, noted for her knowledge of In-d In-d ians throughout, the country, who will attempt to urge the Flutes to submit peacefully to arrest. Through friendly Indians it is hoped to arrange a conference confer-ence with her soon near the hostile redskins' red-skins' camn in Butler canyon. Mrs. WethernT has taken a deep In-I tere&t !n the pursuit of Tse-Xe-Gat, or Hatch, since he was first sought last i spring on the charge of killing Juan j Chacon in March, 'tflS, on the Colorado Uie reservation. Among other depredations committed by Old Polk, leader of the outlaw Flutes, Fl-utes, is a story of his seiiing a 14-year-o'd Indian girl of his band into slavery to several Mexican sheep!) erders. The ; eirl was common property to the lot and i received brutal treatment until she es- j caped to--a family of friendly Utpn. i It is also reported that Chief Posey. ; rho is supporting Old Polk, has on two ! -. ccasions killed squaws for trivial offenses.
