Show Vernal 8th graders topple West Vikings Vernal Junior High's 8th grade hoopsters pocketed their first victory in the 1980-81 season when they toppled the West Junior High Vikings, 35 to 22, Thursday in a game at West. The Panthers jumped out to a 14 to 6 lead in the first quarter on three field goals by Tony Lewis, two field goals by Dan Allen and field goals by Tim Haslem and Derik Adams. Vernal had a ten point lead of 22 to 12 after two quarters of action. Lewis scored two field goals and Haslem, Allen added one two-pointer each. The Panthers increased their ad-, vantage to 13 points in the third quarter as Lewis popped in two field goals, Haslem, Allen hit field goals and Ken Rasmussen tossed in a free throw to give Vernal a 31 to 18 advantage. Vernal scored four points in the fourth quarter on two field goals by Haslem to ' make the final score: Vernal, 35 and West, 22. Lewis was the top scorer for Vernal with 14 points on seven field goals. Also scoring points for Vernal were: Haslem, 10 (five field goals) ; Allen, 8; Adams, 2 and Rasmussen, 1. Scoring points for West were: Tom, 8; Serawop, 4; Honanie, 4; Paytiano, 2; Ashton, 2 and Rasmussen, 2. The Vernal Junior High 8th grade team has a record of 1-0. "Pure hustle is what won the game for us. It was a complete team effort and Haslem had eight steals in the game," stated Vernal Junior High 8th grade coach Kevin Dickson. Members of the Vernal 8th grade team are: Tony Lewis, Derik Adams, Tim Haslem, Ken Rasmussen, Dan Allen, Clark Jones, Joel Turner, Brad Mauss, Rick Porter, Curt Taylor, Troy Caldwell and David Gurr. Vernal Junior High's 9th grade team . suffered its third loss in a row when they were toppled by the Vikings at West Junior High, 51 to 49. Balwin Duncan of West put in two free throws to win the game for West with four seconds left in the contest. Vernal's 9th grade has a 0-3 record. Lloyd Merkley, Kurt Robb, Gary Swim put in two field goals each and Tony Lewis added one field goal to give the Panthers a 14 to 12 lead after one quarter of action. West stayed with the. Panthers in the first quarter on two field goals each by Chet Ridley, Balwin Duncan and two free throws by Ken Asay. West had a three point lead of 27 to 24 at the end of the second quarter. Ridley was the top scorer in the second quarter for West with seven points on three field goals and one free throw. Duncan scored five points on two field goals and one free throw. Kelly Sorenson and Lewis were the top scorers in the second quarter for Vernal with two field goals each. The Vikings increased their lead to five points, 39 to 34, at the end of the third quarter. Kurt Robb was the top scorer in the third quarter for Vernal with two field goals and Duncan and Asay scored two two pointers each for West in the third quarter. Vernal exploded for 15 points in the fourth quarter behind four field goals bv MerUpy two field goals by Robb. field goals by Swim and Brad Richens and a free throw by Brian Kellogg, but West put in 12 points to win the game by the score of 51 to 49. Barry Reyos put in three field goals in the final quarter for West. Merkley was the top scorer for Vernal with 16 points on eight field goals. Also scoring points for Vernal were: Robb, 12; Swim, 8; Lewis, 8; Sorenson, 4; Richens, 2 and Kellogg, 1. Vernal hit 1 out of 9 free throws. Ridley and Duncan were the top scorers for West with 15 points. Ridley put in seven field goals and hit 1 out of 4 free throws and Duncan tossed in six field goals and - hit 3 out of 4 free throws. Also scoring points for West were Reyos, 8; Asay, 8; Robin Reed, 2 and Anthony Serawop, 1. The Panthers will host Altamont on Jan. 8 and will compete in the San Rafael Tournament on Jan. 10. Vernal will host Roosevelt on Jan. 15. Vernal Junior High girls' hoop team was toppled by West Junior High, 37 to 19, Thursday at West. The scores by quarters were: first quarter, Vernal, 4 and West, 2; second quarter, West, 16 and Vernal, 13; third quarter, West, 33 and Vernal, 14 and fourth quarter, West, 37 and Vernal, 19. Sheryl Neal was the top scorer for Vernal with nine points and Tia Liebhardt scored six points. Kim Drollinger put in three points and Lena Cody added one point. N Vernal has a 2-2 record. The Panthers have defeated Roosevelt and Duchesne and have suffered losses to Rock Springs and West. The Panthers will take on Canyonview, Thursday at Vernal Junior High and will host Altamont on Jan. 8. |
