Show The first inhabitants in the Uintah Basin to be recorded on written record were the basket-maker basket-maker people. This was 1500 years ago. They were followed by the Indians. Father Escalante and his Spanish explorers were the first known white men to pass through the Uintah Uin-tah Basin in 1776. Ashley Valley, where Vernal City is located, was named after William Henry Ashley. He was attracted to this area in search of beaver. The first trading post in the county was established near where the village of Whiterocks is now located. It is thought that this trading post was established in 1832 and is the oldest white settlement in Utah. Uintah County took the government title of being 'created.' in 1880. |
