The Utes have also defeated Alta and Springville and placed first in the Steamboat Springs Tournament. Uintah jumped out quickly to a 12-0 lead in the meet with Rock Springs. The Utes' Brett Brown dropped Brian Friel for a takedown and a two-point near fall in the first round for a 4-0 lead in the 98 pound encounter. Brown ended the match when he pinned Friel with 40 seconds left in the second round. Rock Springs' John Gonzales surprised sur-prised Uintah's 105 pounder, Monte Morris with a takedown in the first round, but Morris recovered as he reversed his opponent and gained a 5-2 lead. Morris pocketed another reversal and a two-point near fall in the second round for a 9 to 2 lead and ended the encounter when he pinned his opponent with 1:32 left in the second round. The Rock Springs Tigers garnered their first victory in the meet when Lee Gonzales nipped Uintah's 112 pounder, sophomore, David Gentry, 5-3. Gonzales pocketed a takedown and Gentry nabbed an escape in the first round. Gentry gained an escape and a penalty point, but a three-point near fall in the third round enable Gonzales to defeat Gentry by two points and cut Uintah's lead to 12 to 3. However, Josh Reynolds returned Uintah to its winning, ways when he , blasted John Stassinos, 11 to 0. in the i j 3,?..u.nd ejigjjuntejrejnds gained a 2-0 lead in the first 'round when he dropped Stassinos for a takedown and increased his lead to 7-0 with a reversal and a three-point near fall in the second round. Reynolds pocketed two near falls to win the match by eleven points. Jeff Good, Uintah's 126 pounder, defeated Dan Johnson of Rock Springs, 14 to 7, but the match was a free swinging affair, which had the good fans worried a bit at times. Good gained a 7-0 lead in the first round due to a takedown, two-point near fall and a three-point near fall. Uintah's Good gained a two-point near fall, but he was reversed by Johnson and now Good's blades were facing the wrong direction as far as the Uintah., fans were concerned. I Ute sophomore, Pat Jenkins, wasted little time in getting his match over with as he pinned Montoya of Rock Spr ings with 1:30 left in the first round.; Jenkins dropped Montoya for a takedown and placed Montoya's shoulder blades flat against the mat. . Uintah's Randy Smuin came close to pinning Myron O'Lexy in the first and second rounds as Smuin dropped O'Lexy twice for three point near falls. Smuin finally nailed O'Lexy to the mat as he pinned the Rock Springs matman with 40 seconds left in the third round and gave the Uintah team a 37 to 6 lead. : - Rock Springs won the next three matches to make the final score:, Uintah, 37 and Rock Springs, 22. Brian Ashmore, who placed second in the 1980 : state meet, pinned Brent Hales in the 167 pound match with 32 seconds left in the second round. Rock Springs gained its second pin in a row when Steve Shassetz pinned Uintah's 185 pounder, Don Bohrer with seven seconds left in the second round. The Tigers' heavyweight, Doug Knight, toppled Uintah sophomore, David Weeks, 14 to 5. Knight had a 9 to 1 lead at the end of the first round, but Weeks gained a reversal in the second round and two points near fall in the third round. Utes won seven of the first nine matches in the contest. |
