Show 'IflClff GOLF PLAN MEETS FAVOR Additional Ball for Each Shot Is Novel Idea Put Forward. CHICAGO, May 17. A plan for golf i has drifted up from the southland. It calls for '"two chance" tournament play. Many and many a time the average golfer haa been seen to take another crack at a fairly difficult putt after missing miss-ing the first and sink the ball with neatness neat-ness and dispatch. And how often have you seen a man fail ' completely to get his ball out of a bunker on the first try, yet lift it clear from perhaps even a worse' lie on his second attempt? Or watched a dub hook far out of bounds on his first, and yet send his second screaming down the center of the fairway? They were discussing this peculiarity of the duffer at a certain southern club one evening last winter and some genius In the audience suggested holding a "two chance" tourney. The idea met with instant in-stant favor and after it had proved a success suc-cess at that club it was passed along to others At first the system worked like this: If a player was satisfied with his drive, all right; he went ahead to play his iron shot. If not satisfied, he could drive again, but he must play th second ball, even if the last drive was worse than his first. When It came to playing an iron shot, the player had the privilege of dropping a ball a club's length away 'from his first ball before addressing . the latter. If not satisfied with his iron, or perhaps brassie shot, he could abide by whatever fate decreed de-creed as to the destination of that second pili. In approaching the green he also had the double chance, and likewise in putting. This schemo lent a touch of uncertainty un-certainty to a round that added much to the interest of a midweek medal play event. This system, however, did not work out very well in practice, and at times had a bad effect on the dispositions of the contestants. con-testants. E-o it was agreed to make it a straight tsvo-chance proposition on each shot. In other words, every man could play two bails on each shot, could drlvo twice, have two brassies or irons, two mashie shots and two putts, and his best ball would count for his score. |
