Show HISTORIAN LOCATES MOUiFiT RUINS Pioneer Utah Fortification Recalled by Means of Original Mud Walls. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, May 17. Ruins of the old mud walls of Mound Fort, established in 1S53, wero located today by Andrew Jcnsou, assistant church historian, who has just returned from a historical tour of the Ogden stake. Mr. Jenson states that, although time and progress have greatly changed tho old mound which formed the west 6ide of the fort, the historic his-toric pioneer fortification can still be recalled by means of tho mere foundations founda-tions of the original mud wall built on the south and east sides, to form the fort. Tho walls were sixteen feet high and three feet thick, aud the old-time settlers set-tlers dwelt within this enclosure to protect pro-tect themselves against the Indians. The fort was built about 1S53, about a mile north of the Ogden river. At the present time it is located on the west side of Washington avenue, between be-tween Tenth and Twelfth streets, about a mile north of tho bridge spanning Ogden river. It was built in such a way that the natural mound on one side formed protection on the west. The east and south walls cannot be traced. Mr. Jenson says that three other forts were built at Ogden. The first, built in 1841,-was called Goodyear's fort. In 1S4S it was sold to James Brown, a member of the Mormon battalion. bat-talion. This afterward became the original orig-inal settlement of Ogden, which was named after Peter Skeen Ogden, the trapper. The second fort, called Farr's, was named in honor of Loren Farr. It was built in 1850, and was located on the north side of the Ogden river, between that stream and Mill creek. At the present time it is three-fourths of a mile east of Washington avenue, near the mouth of Ogden canyon. No remnant rem-nant is left of this fort. The fourth, or Bingham's, fort, was built about the same time as Mounds fort in 1853, and is located three miles north of Ogden, immediately west of the present Five Points. Considerable controversy has existed as to where Ogden 's Hole was located. Some of the old settlers claimed it was North Ogden, but Howard Stansbury |
