Show READ'S AIRSHIP AVERAGED NINETY MILES AN HOUR HORTA, Islaqd of Fayal, May 17. (By the Associated Press.) Tho NC-4 averaged aver-aged ninety miles an hour to Horta hay, and, according to Lieutenant Commander Read, made the flight in thirteen hours and 18 minutes. The three seaplanes for a considerable time after their start from Trepassey flew virtually together, but finally the NC-4 drew ahead. Commander Read looked to be va splendid splen-did condition on his arrival here. When about 200 miles from Corvo Jsland; ha said, he met bad weather and fog. This continued to the end. His plane flew at an altitude of 2000 feet; then was com- pelled to come down cJose to the water, owing to the fog. Th6re was no mishap during the passage, pas-sage, and the NC-4 was found to be in perfect condition. The numbers of the crew had no sleep, but nourished themselves fairly well on sandwiches. The men were 'all fit and anxious to continue to Europe. Commander Read said the NC-1 had made a landing at sea close to HOrta, but the NC-3 had not been heard from for a considerable time. During the early part of the flight the seaplanes were favored with full moonlight, moon-light, and they met three steamers on thts way. |
