Show MH'3 TIL FOR MURDER IS OPENED Sudden Illness of Witness Forces a Brief Recess. Trial of William O. McNair on a charge of murder in the first degree for killing Edward T. "Williams was begun in Judge J. Louis 'Brown's division of the Third ; district court yesterday after a motion for continuance offered by District At- i tomey Wilson McCarthy because of the condition of Mrs. I,ouise Kan-ens, one of the state's principal witnesses, had been overruled. The condition of health of Mrs. Kar-rens Kar-rens occasioned the motion offered by the district attorney. It was opposed by Attorney Oscar W. Carlson, counsel for the defendant. The court took a recess until two physicians, physi-cians, Drs. W. R. Calderwood and W. Scott Key tins1, had been called for consultation. con-sultation. They were of the opinion that Mrs. Karrens might safely testify, if care were taken that she be not excited or agitated by the questioning of the attorneys. at-torneys. The case was accordingly resumed in the afternoon and examination of talis-men talis-men for the jury was begun. At the time of adjournment counsel for the defendant had examined the first twelve men called into the jury box. |
