Hornung, which will confer with the -committees from the state council coun-cil of defense In regard to curbing the activities ac-tivities of questionable organizations in soliciting funds from merchants and business busi-ness men. The committee of the state council of defense, which has the matter under advisement, ad-visement, is headed by L. H. Farneworth and will hold a meeting at 2 o'clock today to-day to go into the matter of the solicitation solicita-tion of funds by soldiers at Fort Douglas. It was mentioned that the commanders at the fort are opposed to the solicitation of funds for any purpose unless it has the approval of the officers. The matter was brought before the Rotary Ro-tary club when A. B. Pembroke called attention at-tention to the concert which is to be given Saturday night for the benefit of the mess funds of the Salt Lake batteries in the Utah artillery and the field hospital corps. Mr. Relf then called the attention of the club to the many contributions asked during the last few weeks. A central cen-tral fund for the benefit of the soldiers was advocated by Mr. Relf and he stated that with such a fund in existance and well administered, the business men would not hesitate to contribute. He urged that the irresponsible parties should be curbed in their activities in starting funds. F. ' H. Hornung suggested that the Business Men's alliance should take charge of the matter, but the club decided to call the attention of the state council of defense to it, since a meeting had been called for the purpose of looking Into the subscriptions subscrip-tions -which have been circulated during the last month. Frank Nelson and Samuel Rosenblatt, newly elected members of the club, were Introduced to the membership. The attention of the Rotary club was directed to the necessity of a flag to be furnished to the Salt Lake ambulance corps in France. One of the members of the organization wrote a letter to F. S. Murphv asking that the Rotary club donate do-nate a" flag, to be returned to the Rotary club after the war. CaDtain W. V. Coch-ett Coch-ett of Fort Douglas said he would furnish the flag and J. F. Boes donated a silver ferrule for It and will engrave the ferrule with the name of the Rotary club and the date of the presentation of the flag. |
